stein and toklas
Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein-Paris, France

Gertrude Stein currently is not merely a legend, but also a whole folklore, a subject for an epic poem…*

*Carl Von Vechten

Before Gloria Steinam,  two American women blazed a trail for feminism as the Grand Dames of the Avant-Garde artistic movement from their salon in Paris.  For more than 30 years, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas welcomed a never-ending parade of luminaries, GI’s and ordinary citizens to their home including Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Graham Greene, Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse.

In Gertrude Stein and a Companion, playwright Win Wells has captured the essence of this collaboration in a witty and poignant script that evokes the spare beauty of words and language made famous by Stein.
