Bluff City Theater today announced a 2016 Season that will include two comedies, two dramas and a musical all built around the theme of strong female characters.
The season will open February 19 with The Lady With All The Answers by David Rambo. Based on the life and career of advice columnist Ann Landers, The Lady With All The Answers is a funny and poignant peek inside the personal turmoil of the woman who defined morality for more than a generation. The Lady With All The Answers features the real life team of Lenny Bart directing and Tricia Barr starring as Ann Landers.
On March 18, we bring the regional première of Win Well’s award-winning play Gertrude Stein and a Companion. Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas were two of the most influential writers of the gilded age and their salon in Paris played host to the who’s who of the time – Hemingway, Picasso and Matisse among others. Gertrude Stein and a Companion is at heart a love story that brings to life some of the great artistic luminaries of the era. You won’t want to miss this memorable work featuring John Contini, star of last season’s summer productions, The Heiress and Oliver! in his Hannibal directing début!
How fitting that we present the Hannibal première of You Caught Me Dancing. Playwright Bernard Sabath, a Mark Twain super-fan and author of several Mark-Twain-themed plays wrote this comedic look at the life of Katy Leary, longtime servant, confidant and muse to the Clemens family. In You Caught Me Dancing, Katy recreates dozens of characters who passed through her life while in the Clemens’ employ. You Caught Me Dancing opens June 3.
Our summer musical once again pairs seasoned professionals with a talented cast of local children and amateurs, under the direction of Herbie Barnes, returning after directing last season’s smash hit production of Oliver! Alice in Wonderland (The Musical) follows Alice on her bold adventure as she meets stressed rabbits, talking playing cards, a rhyming cat, a mad hat-maker and all the other beloved characters created by Lewis Carroll. Alice in Wonderland (The Musical) opens June 24 and runs weekly until the end of the season on July 30.
Running in rep with Alice will be Best of Enemies, a powerful story that shows the more things change, the more they stay the same. Based on a true story as told in the book of the same name by Osha Gray Davidson, Best of Enemies examines the relationship between Ann Atwater, an African-American activist and C.P. Ellis, the Exalted Grand Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan in 1972 Durham North Carolina. Despite their immense differences, Atwater and Ellis found that the worst of enemies can become the best of friends through dialogue and mutual respect. Jennifer Stewart, the director of last year’s critically acclaimed The Heiress, returns to direct Best of Enemies, which opens on July 13.
